Arlington Lagrange Lacrosse Club

Founder, President, Coach, Friend

John Basso

Sadly, after a long illness, League Founder, President, and Coach John Joseph Basso, Esq., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday May 22, 2016 surrounded by his wife and children. He was 63 years old.

Coach Basso, along with Coach Arenson are responsible for bringing this great sport and league to a community in which it did not previously exist.

Coach Basso somehow found the time to juggle family, work, and high school coaching responsibilities to establish and run a program that we all now benefit from. In addition to his very active and successful professional life, Coach Basso coached lacrosse at Arlington High School at both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels for over 10 years. Coach Basso was a lifelong athlete. In high school, he was a standout athlete and leader on both the football and lacrosse fields. His athletic career continued in college as a proud member of the 1972 Hobart College National Championship Lacrosse Team, which has been recognized as a “Team of Distinction.” He had a deep love of the “creator’s game,” which he continued to play well into his fifties and that he passed on to countless children over the course of his lifetime. He was extremely proud of his role of coach both on and off the field.

Coach Basso’s hard work and tireless dedication to the game of lacrosse and our community, has laid the foundation and provided the building blocks for this program’s current and future successes. In a relatively short period of time this club has produced players that not only succeeded at the high school level but went on to compete and succeed at the Collegiate Division I,II,III and club levels.  To date, over 1,000 boys and girls have come through the Arlington-Lagrange youth program, Where they not only learned how to play the game, but more importantly, to love the game.

The Arlington-Lagrange Lacrosse Club has provided many opportunities for all of our families and we cannot thank Coach Basso enough. Words cannot describe Coach Basso’s contribution and impact on the game of lacrosse and this community. He will be greatly missed by all.

Calling hours for Coach Basso will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 3pm to 8pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Freedom Park, 212 Skidmore Road, Pleasant Valley New York.  Memorial donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY or to the Ronald McDonald House, Albany, NY.
